Why we keep going in winter
Grayton sits on the Emerald Coast, about ten miles south of I-10, with Henderson Beach, Topsail Hill Preserve, and St. Andrews nearby. The usual panhandle mix is here — white sand, dune lakes, and Gulf water that turns emerald when it is calm — but the campground is quieter than Destin-side Henderson and more shaded than Topsail.
We keep landing here in January and February, coming south out of a western winter. That is the first week the air feels like a break, and it sits inside the November–April window the chart colors as comfortable. Most travel pages send you in summer, when kayak and paddleboard rentals on the dune lake tend to be open. Those months are also the ones that sit well above 80°F.
The Gulf beach is about a mile from the loops, down a road — bikes beat hauling chairs. Between the dune lake and the Gulf there is a short shaded hike. Flags on this stretch are almost never green; yellow is the usual even on calm days. If you want 70° weather, this is a winter and spring park. If you want to swim, you are trading comfort for the water.
